Featured Articles from the International Journal of Sexual Health

To commemorate this year's World Sexual Health Day theme, +Positive Relationships, the International Journal of Sexual Health (IJSH)—the official journal of WAS—is offering select articles free to access from September 2nd to October 31st, 2024.

These featured articles explore critical aspects of +Positive Relationships, providing valuable insights for professionals, researchers, and anyone interested in advancing Sexual Health and Rights.

1. In Pursuit of Pleasure: A Biopsychosocial Perspective on Sexual Pleasure and Gender
Laan, E. T. M., Klein, V., Werner, M. A., van Lunsen, R. H. W., & Janssen, E. (2021)

Read the full article here (Open Access)

This paper presents a comprehensive biopsychosocial analysis of sexual pleasure, revealing that while men and women have similar capacities for sexual pleasure, their experiences are often unequal. The article challenges the notion that gender differences in pleasure are biologically determined and calls for a more critical discourse to address these inequalities.

2. The Health Benefits of Sexual Expression
Gianotten, W. L., Alley, J. C., & Diamond, L. M. (2021)

Read the full article here (Free to View until October 31st, 2024)

This article highlights the significant emotional, social, and physical benefits of sexual activity, which are often overlooked in healthcare. Despite the challenge in proving that "good sex promotes good health," the authors argue for greater attention to sexuality within healthcare professions and call for more integrated research into its health benefits.

We'd also like to remind you of these two articles that we featured earlier in September:

3. Minority Stress and Relationship Well-Being in Sexual Minorities: The Varying Role of Outness on Relationship and Sexual Satisfaction
Vale, M. T., & Bisconti, T. L. (2021)

Read the full article here (Free to View until October 31st, 2024)

4. Integrating Sexual Pleasure for Quality & Inclusive Comprehensive Sexuality Education
Mark, K., Corona-Vargas, E., & Cruz, M. (2021)

Read the full article here (Free to View until October 31st, 2024)

We encourage you to download and share these resources while they are available as open-access.

Spotlight on Men's Sexual and Reproductive Health: A Global Call for Action

Men's sexual and reproductive health (SRH) is facing significant challenges, with higher rates of sexually transmitted infections, declining sperm counts, and increasing male sexual dysfunctions like erectile dysfunction. Despite these issues, men's SRH remains largely overlooked in global and regional health policies.

A new report from Global Action on Men's Health, Out of Focus: The Representation of Men in Regional and Global Sexual and Reproductive Health Policy, reveals that only 16% of key health policies address men's SRH needs, often in negative terms, and neglect critical sub-groups such as older and disabled men.

The report calls for a positive shift in focus on men's SRH, advocating for more sex-disaggregated data and addressing neglected issues like male infertility and reproductive cancers. It emphasizes the need for SRH programs that equally consider the needs of men and women, recognizing that better outcomes for men also benefit women.

The report was launched during a GAMH webinar on September 4th, 2024, where WAS President Elna Rudolph was a speaker. Watch the webinar recording here.
