WAS Supports WHO's Positive Sexuality Emphasis
In an era where health and well-being are at the forefront of global conversations, WAS proudly recognizes and supports the 37th Human Reproductive Programme meeting in Geneva.

Our Immediate Past President, Pedro Nobre, recently delivered the following statement at the HRP meeting following the Director's report.

"The World Association for Sexual Health (WAS) congratulates the Human Reproduction Programme (HRP) for the many achievements and breakthroughs in sexual and reproductive health during the last 50 years.

WAS commends HRP for the new emphasizes towards a more positive approach to sexuality, under the leadership of Pascale Allotey, and welcomes the inclusion of sexual health and well-being across the life-course as a focus area in the 2023-2028 strategic plan.

Recent research supports the central role of sexual health and wellbeing in positively impacting quality of life, as well as global health, wellbeing and life satisfaction. This positive view of sexuality as a central dimension of human experience and a source of well-being and satisfaction is also at the heart of the WAS Declaration on Sexual Rights the WAS Declaration on Sexual Pleasure and the recently approved WAS Declaration on Sexual Justice.

WAS has consolidated expertise and is willing to contribute to many of the new and emerging topics listed in the HRP focus areas including sexual pleasure, sexual dysfunctions, gender-affirming care, sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression, incl. LGBTQ+, masculinities, fatherhood, male SRH, Adolescent SRH, and intimate partner violence.

Many of these topics have been the themes of World Sexual Health Day, a WAS initiative launched in 2010 celebrated annually on 4 September to raise awareness about the importance of Sexual Health, Rights, Justice and Pleasure for ALL.

Moreover, the WAS mission and particularly the new Declaration on Sexual Justice is strongly aligned with the HRP global strategic objective "To develop an inclusive, comprehensive global Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) Strategy that incorporates the latest scientific evidence, embraces human rights, gender equality and principles of justice."

WAS is committed to strengthening the collaboration with the HRP and WHO and is well-placed to support the HRP's value proposition in developing research, informing policy change and promoting capacity-strengthening and professional exchange across a broad network of sexual health, rights and education organizations and experts from around the world. Together, we aim to expand and advance "Sexual Health, Rights, Justice and Pleasure for ALL."

Pedro's message, reflecting WAS's commitment to these principles, was met with a positive reception, underscoring our collaborative relationship with the World Health Organization (WHO).

WAS is dedicated to further strengthening our alliance with HRP and WHO, supporting research development, policy change, and capacity-building. Together, we're united in our mission to promote "Sexual Health, Rights, Justice and Pleasure for ALL."
We thank you for your ongoing engagement and look forward to our continued work in championing Sexual Health and Rights globally.

Warm regards,
