Remembering Dr. Ruth Westheimer (1928-2024)

It is with great sadness that we share the news of Dr. Ruth Westheimer's passing at the age of 96. Dr. Ruth, an internationally acclaimed sex therapist, transformed public conversations about human intimacy with her open, nonjudgmental, and good-humored approach.

Dr. Ruth became a household name in the early 1980s with her popular late-night radio show, "Sexually Speaking," and continued to educate and entertain audiences through her TV show, "The Dr. Ruth Show," as well as numerous books and academic contributions. She was a pioneer in normalizing discussions around Sexual Health, advocating for safer sex, and supporting LGBTQIA+ and abortion rights.

Born Karola Ruth Siegel in Frankfurt, Germany, Dr. Ruth survived the Holocaust, and later earned her doctorate in education from Columbia University. She studied sex therapy with Helen Singer Kaplan, further enhancing her expertise. Her remarkable life story and dedication to sexual education and advocacy have left an indelible mark on the world.

Many WAS members had the privilege to know her personally and can attest to her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to Sexual Health. She will be sorely missed, but her legacy lives on in the many lives she has touched.

Dr. Ruth is survived by her two children and four grandchildren. Her legacy of promoting Sexual Health and Rights for all will continue to inspire and guide us.
Thank you for being a valued member of our community and for your ongoing dedication to promoting Sexual Health and Rights worldwide.

Warm regards,

The World Association for Sexual Health
