+ what social media does to young people
| | | | Surrogacy is already illegal in Italy, but a domestic ban was apparently not enough for prime minister Giorgia Meloni, who recently banned Italians from seeking surrogacy abroad. It is now a "universal crime" under Italian law, putting it on a par with crimes against humanity. As a legal scholar writes, this is one of many small moves Meloni is making to gradually restrict the definition of a family, limiting the options for LGBTQ+ families but also anyone who doesn't meet a very narrow, conservative definition of parenthood. The question of what social media is doing to our young people is one of the most significant of our age. And yet we found out this week that there is a dearth of reliable evidence on the matter, even though many people would like us to believe otherwise. A new review of the evidence does throw up some interesting findings nonetheless, including the fact that social media appears to be less damaging if young people use it actively — so commenting, sharing and discussing, rather than just passively scrolling through endless videos. Something that I didn't know until I read this article was that fibromyalgia, a debilitating condition associated with pain throughout the body, affects men as well as women. The latter are more likely to develop the condition, but the former can be hit too. However, they are underdiagnosed and face difficulties getting treatment. And to mark the release of Gladiator II, we asked two archaeologists to watch the movie and tells us about the real life stories behind the characters.
