Where were you when Marine Le Pen was ruled ineligible to run for office? People in France may be asking that question for generations. The sentence of a five-year ban, which a Paris court issued on Monday after it found the far-right leader guilty of embezzlement, appears to knock her out of the 2027 race for the presidency. Le Pen, a three-time candidate, won more than 41 percent of votes in the 2022 second round and was reportedly leading in some 2027 polls.

In an interview, political scientist Luc Rouban of Sciences Po tells The Conversation that Le Pen's sentence represents a "historic turnaround" as seen against a strain of French political culture based on unethical "arrangements", and lays out the challenges that her National Rally party will face.

Aurelien Mondon, a political scientist at the University of Bath in England, meanwhile, warns that the politician could now build "a narrative of victimisation", but issue-oriented media coverage, may decrease the likelihood that it sticks.

Endometriosis is a condition that causes misery for millions of women, but we have frustratingly little idea what causes it. However, this might be gradually changing, as Dora Koller at the University of Barcelona has found a clear link between traumatic experiences and the likelihood of developing this painful, prevalent disease. Her research reinforces the link between mental and physical health, and show how the body's response to stress can cause serious illness.
