Dear WAS Members and Friends, The World Association for Sexual Health (WAS) dedicates this newsletter to our founding president, Prof. Romano Forleo, whose passing on 1 August marked the loss of a pioneering figure in sexual health. | | In Memory of Prof. Romano Forleo (1933–2025) | | | A visionary physician, rights advocate, and leader, Prof. Forleo helped shape the global field of sexual health and laid the foundation for the movement we continue today. His life and legacy continue to inspire the mission and values of WAS: rights-focused, professional, inclusive, and collaborative. As our first president, he defined a vision for a world where sexual health and rights are recognized as fundamental to human dignity and well-being. His work lives on in every WAS initiative, every global partnership, and every commitment to evidence-based, rights-based sexual health for all. | | In remembering Prof. Forleo, we also look back on a milestone in WAS history: the 40th Anniversary Ceremony in Rome (2018). This event brought together past and present leaders to celebrate four decades of advancing sexual health and rights worldwide - and to reaffirm the values he championed: inclusivity, professionalism, and a steadfast commitment to human dignity. | | At the 40th Anniversary Ceremony in Rome, Prof. Forleo is pictured alongside past presidents Pedro Nobre and Fernando Bianco - a powerful reminder of the legacy and continuity of leadership that has shaped WAS's global impact. Prof. Forleo's legacy reminds us that our collective efforts today are part of a movement he helped set in motion nearly five decades ago.
