Way back in February—before RFK Jr. gutted the CDC entirely and Trump turned his attention to late night comedians—the new Administration censored the CDC website. The agency was told to pull down much of its information so partisan hacks could review it for words that trigger Republicans like transgender, pregnant people, and diversity. The goal was to make sure all information posted by the country’s preeminent health organization matched Trump’s Executive Order on sex and gender (which was as factually inaccurate as it was discriminatory) and Trump’s Executive Order on DEI (which was as racist as it was factually inaccurate). As such, any web page that hinted at diversity, used the acronym LGBTQ, or included the word transgender (or in some cases the word transmission because they sound so much alike) had to be scrubbed. This had far-reaching implications for what was and wasn’t available. At one point, both the prescribing guidelines for contraception and the screening and treatment guidelines for STIs were unavailable. Pages like “The impact of HIV on racial and ethnic minorities” were also disappeared, while others—like much of HIV.gov—were just edited to the point of being useless. This early form of censorship by Trump 2.0 was slapped down by a U.S. District Judge in Washington when a group of doctors sued saying that the loss of information had a direct effect on their ability to, you know, save lives and s**t. The judge issued a temporary injunction ordering the websites to be restored. The Administration did not appeal the decision at the time, but it did add a banner to many of the pages that went back up.
In the months that have followed (yes, it’s only been months), the Administration has ramped up its attack on science and free speech exponentially (Pentagon reporters will apparently be handed their stories already written by Pete Hegseth from now on). Is it any wonder that in the wake of such chaos many of us—myself included—stopped paying attention to whether health information had been put up, taken down, or re-worded by political hacks until it barely resembled what real scientists had said? Spoiler alert: it had. Inside Medicine reported this weekend that numerous pages have once again been removed from the CDC site. Not surprisingly, most of them involve sex in some way. Some of the missing web pages include:
I’m personally offended by that last one because… I wrote it. (In fairness, it was painfully out of date and had any other Administration removed it I would have totally understood.) Two pages that had been missing (one about malaria and the other about the parasite cyclosporiasis) have been restored since the story broke on Saturday. Their only sin was to mention asexual reproduction of the germs in question. It seems that they got caught up in an overly aggressive sweep of all things sex—you know like all those poor men in Epstein’s birthday book. As I was writing this, ABC announced it was bringing back Jimmy Kimmel. Maybe this was always the plan—to appease our overlords in their time of mourning and bring him back quickly—or maybe protests and boycotts worked this time. Let’s not let our guard down though. FCC Czar Brendan Carr—who wears a gold pin of Donny on his lapel—has already threatened to go after other shows like The View, and Trump suggested that it was “really illegal” for networks to criticize him: “When 97% of stories are bad about a person, it’s no longer free speech.” Only 97%? Anti-Trans Mom Strips at School Board MeetingThe President of the Yolo County Moms for Liberty Chapter When Beth Bourne took to the podium during the public comments portion of the Davis Unified School District Board Meeting, she was wearing a long-sleeved, blue-and-white striped shirt and jeans. When she left, she was in a black bikini. After introducing herself as a parent in the district, Bourne said she was there to talk about the locker room policies. She began by saying, “Right now we require our students to undress for PE class, and I’m just going to give you an idea of what that looks like….” That’s when she took off her top. She continued, as she stepped out of her pants, saying “…this school district is saying that depending on a child’s transgender identity, they could pick which bathroom they want.” Board members cut her off at that point calling a recess and leaving the room while Beth whined about her first amendment rights. Frankly, I wish they had pressed her on her argument while she was standing there in her bikini because I have questions. Was she complaining about the locker room or the bathroom? Do kids change in the bathroom? Do schools in the district really not offer private changing spaces for kids who are uncomfortable (either because they’re trans or because they had a mother like Beth who taught them to fear some of their peers)? Did she really think that a grown woman randomly stripping in public was akin to a middle schooler who has to change for gym putting on a different tee-shirt in a designated changing area? Where did she get that lovely bikini? And seriously Beth, how many times a week do you do Pilates because you look great, girl? Moms for Liberty was started in 2021 to protest Covid-19 public health measures like closed schools, vaccine requirements, and mask mandates. Its members have since taken issue with all of “the woke agenda in school.” The group, which started in Florida but has chapters around the country, is doggedly anti-trans, opposes teaching about race in schools, and endorses book bans. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the group uses its “multiple social media platforms to target teachers and school officials, advocate for the abolition of the Department of Education, advance a conspiracy propaganda, and spread hateful imagery and rhetoric against the LGBTQ community.” Some of you may remember when Bridget Zeigler, one of the founders of Moms for Liberty, was caught in a sex scandal with her husband Christian who was the Chairman of the Florida Republican Party at the time. For those who don’t: it involved threesomes, video tape, and allegations of rape. These people are the queens of “do as I say, not as I do.” Speaking of queens, Beth Bourne was part of her own scandal. A video of her berating a group of drag queens in the lobby of a Hawaii hotel went viral last year. In it she yells (or whines loudly) that she paid $3,000 to be there and doesn’t want her kid to have to see men dressed up as women. She goes on to claim that seeing these men dressed as women will cause “effeminate boys” to have their penises cut off one day. (Does someone need to tell her that most drag queens still have penises, or will that break her bigoted brain?) We’ve all seen middle-aged white women full of righteous indignation call for a manager, but this one is special. Watch the video. The drag queens, by the way, stay admirably calm. After that video got out, Bourne was quickly identified as an employee of the University of California, Davis, and a petition to have her fired garnered 7,500 signatures. The university condemned her statements calling them offensive and deeply hurtful, and placed her on leave temporarily. It did not fire her at that time. In what can only be described as karmic retribution, Bourne lost her job in February after Trump’s cuts to research funding ended the transportation project she was working on. Despite being laid off, she remains a huge fan of the president because, well, he hates transpeople as much as she does. The Davis Unified School District has clearly not heard the last of Beth Bourne. We can be sure that she’ll make a fuss about something at the next school board meeting or the one after that. The only thing we don’t know is if she’ll be wearing clothes when she does. Anesthesiologist Who Left Surgery to Have Sex Has Learned His LessonThe interns of Grey Sloan Memorial who are always coupling in the on-call room, screwing in the supply closet, or macking in the MRI machine (okay that one never happened) have nothing on a real-life anesthesiologist in the UK who left a surgery—while the patient was under—to have sex with a nurse. During a routine surgery in September 2023, Dr. Suhail Anjum asked a nurse to monitor the patient while he went to the bathroom. Only he wasn’t going to the bathroom, he was looking for Nurse C (her name has not been released). He found her and f**ked her in a neighboring operating room where they were caught a few minutes later trying to put their clothes back on. Dr. Anjum, who is married and has three kids, was gone from his OR for eight minutes. Nothing bad happened to the patient during that time, but it could have because he was under general anesthesia and there was no anesthesiologist keeping an eye on him. Anjum was later fired and subjected to disciplinary action by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS). The MPTS heard the case recently and went pretty easy on him. They agreed that the “incident” with Nurse C “had the potential to distract Dr. Anjum” and that “he may not have been able to give his full attention to the patient’s care.” At less than eight minutes, it was clearly not mind-blowing sex, but I’m guessing it was more than potentially distracting. The guy was balls deep in nurse a few doors down, he wasn’t giving any attention to his patient’s care. Even Mark Sloan would be appalled. The Tribunal chair said there was “a very low risk” that Dr. Anjum would do this again. No sanctions were imposed on the doctor. Lexie Grey is rolling over in her fictional grave. P.S. Tylenol during pregnancy does not causes Autism, pregnant women should not “tough out fevers,” and the Hep B vaccine does have to be given to infants because the virus isn’t only transmitted through sex. We can talk about all of this in more detail next week. In the meantime, how about none of us take medical advice from someone who can’t pronounce acetaminophen.Sex on Wednesday is free today.
