More details, including theme, speakers, and regional focus, will be announced shortly. Stay tuned, and thank you for helping us strengthen global learning on this vital topic. | | | International Human Rights Day | | | | United Nations 2025 Theme: Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials | | | On 10 December, the world marks International Human Rights Day, commemorating the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. Nearly eight decades later, the promise of dignity, equality, and autonomy remains unfinished business, especially when it comes to sexual rights. Sexual rights are human rights. They draw directly from the UDHR's commitments to: - Dignity and equality (Article 1) - Non-discrimination (Article 2) - Liberty and security of person (Article 3) - Privacy (Article 12) - Free and full consent in relationships and family life (Article 16) - Health and wellbeing (Article 25) Yet around the world, these rights are still denied: - Same-sex relationships remain criminalized - Adolescents lack access to essential sexual health information - People with disabilities face coercion or forced sterilisation - Survivors of sexual violence struggle for justice - Comprehensive sexuality education continues to face backlash - Transgender and gender-diverse people are denied affirming healthcare WAS remains committed to a world where sexual rights are fully realized, where every person can access dignity, autonomy, safety, and wellbeing without discrimination. | | | IJSH Spotlight: New Research from the Official Journal of WAS | | | | As the official journal of the World Association for Sexual Health, the International Journal of Sexual Health (IJSH) continues to bring forward research that expands our understanding of sexual wellbeing across contexts, communities, and life stages. | | | Editor's Selected Article | | | Adverse Adolescent Experiences and Condomless Sex Among African American Adolescents Jun Sung Hong, Jinwon Kim, Dexter R. Voisin & Lois M. Takahashi DOI: 10.1080/19317611.2025.2583153 | | | This study examines how adverse adolescent experiences influence condomless sex among both heterosexual and sexually minoritized African American adolescents, and explores the potential buffering role of religious participation. The findings offer valuable insights for practitioners and researchers working in adolescent health, resilience, and risk reduction. WAS Individual Members receive full, free access to the journal. | | | As we wrap up an impactful year, we want to thank every member, partner, federation, and volunteer who has contributed to strengthening sexual wellbeing and human rights worldwide. Please note that the WAS offices will be closed from 13 December 2025 to 5 January 2026. Wishing all who celebrate a joyful and restorative holiday season. May this time with loved ones bring connection, rest, and renewal, and here's to a bright, collaborative, and meaningful year ahead.
