Insight from SRHM: The State of Sexual and Reproductive Health in Beirut

In light of recent events in Lebanon, Dr. Faysal El Kak, President of the Eastern Mediterranean Federation of the World Association for Sexual Health (EMFeSH), shared firsthand insights into the state of sexual and reproductive health and human rights during the September and October 2024 bombings in Beirut.

Dr. El Kak, who is also the Director of the Women Integrated Sexual Health (WISH) Program at the American University of Beirut, spoke with Eszter Kismodi, Chair of the WAS Sexual Rights Committee and Chief Executive of Sexual and Reproductive Health Matters (SRHM), to discuss the current challenges in the region.

World Menopause Day – October 18th, 2024

As World Menopause Day approaches this Friday, we want to highlight the message from UNFPA about the importance of addressing menopause in sexual and reproductive health services. Menopause affects half the world's population, yet remains largely unaddressed by health systems. It is a human rights issue, and there's a growing need for comprehensive care that supports individuals during menopause.

Key considerations include:

  • Ensuring access to care for marginalized populations, including Black, Hispanic, and transgender individuals.
  • Addressing menopause symptoms such as vaginal dryness, pain during intercourse, incontinence, and STIs.
  • Providing holistic support for post-menopausal health, including reproductive options and cardiovascular care.

Menopause is not the end of sexuality or sexual health. We must advocate for services that provide non-discriminatory, targeted support throughout this stage of life.
